San Sebastian Tour, mining town of San Sebastian in the heart of the Sierra Madre Mountains

"Courtesy of The Insider's Guide to Vallarta"

If you would like to have a taste of old Mexico, this is a must on your list of adventures.  San Sebastian is a 17th century mining town in the heart of the Sierra Madre Mountains.  It is a town untouched by time with residents living and working in the traditional ways of Mexico.  The drive to San Sebastian is breathtakingly beautiful as you weave through the mountains further and further up into the hills.  You will stop along the way at a tequila distillery that is family-owned and operated without electricity.  You will experience a tour of the distillery where everything is done by human power and the tequila is some of the best that Jalisco has to offer.  Plan on taking some home with you.

Upon arrival in San Sebastian you will feel as if you have been placed back in time hundreds of years ago.  You can almost hear the hustle and bustle of the town when it was in its prime.  As you walk through the town you will visit the 18th century church, walk by the rifle holes of the old fort, pass a mule meandering along cobblestone streets, and smell the coffee that is being roasted by the ladies of the town.  You must try the coffee and the sweet treats.  The tour includes a fabulous lunch at Hacienda Jalisco where they serve you family style.  Homemade tortillas, beef, chicken, pork, all kinds of sauces including a wonderful mole, and other delicious treats just keep coming.

One of the sweetest treats is the eldest member of the community, one of the earliest young brides of San Sebastian.  She will share stories of the town, her family, and her life.  She is charming, witty, and thrilled to share her memories.  One of the rooms of her home is filled with pictures and memorabilia.  Get your picture taken with her, send it back to her when you return home, and she will treasure it in a photo album of visitors from all over the world.

This is an all-day adventure of comfort (air-conditioned minivan), beauty, tastes, connection, history, tradition, and pleasure.  It is well worth the price as there is nothing else like it.  Take a trip back in time and return home blessed by the adventure.

Depart from Marina Vallarta for this tour, which must be arranged in advance.  This review submitted by Carole K. from San Diego, CA, who visited in August, 2007 .  She and her partner were part of a group of about 15-20 people, and on a scale of 1-10, rating how likely she would be to take the tour again, Carole offered an enthusiastic"10!"
